Prob a good idea to get the basics right first. Then worry about the magical stuff. Like you said its the only thing on the bike that is stock.

I know you said your cams are retarded, but have you tried a more aggressive cam? May give you the extra power to get that extra 500 rpm in 6th. When you getting this custom grind?
