I used some home depot dregreaser its the inexpensive one in a matte clear bottle around a dollar or two. Works good doesnt stain. I used it on the chain along with an old tooth brushed got the job done good.
The way I did it is I started cleaning the chain before I washed the bike, degreaser does a better job. Be generous with it. I also use it in the wheels gets the brake dust and oily residue off.
