After thinking on it for a month and checking different combinations of factors, I think what really happened was my boot got stuck because my foot's arch was on the pegs instead of my toes.

Reason for that is I had just slipped my foot forward to downshift, then immediately came to a stop. My work-around is move my foot forward to downshift to first, slide my foot back to having my toes on the pegs, then come to a completely stop then take my foot off.

And I'd rather have taken that spill at 0 and learn how to work with protective boots than going down on the freeway and break these tiny little bones in my feet at speed, tell you the truth.
