You have the most control over the situation by staying on the bike until it hits the ground. Or at least that's what everyone always says. Which I think is true, You can stop a lot quicker with tires and brakes than you will rolling and sliding. Most people go into a panic mode which makes them focus on what's happening rather than what they can do and end up dropping or dumping the bike as a last resort method because they think that's all they can do since they wasted their time to do anything else.
