J- with my bike, sometimes it takes a bit more ooph to get it into first- like it's just stuck.... if I give it a bit more forceful tap, it will go right on down... same going up into second... sometimes I need to use a stronger lift to get it to go up into second  I just swear quietly and keeep going...
