It doesn't take a professional to lower a bike. The key is to not lower it too much (I'd say +2", others might say +1.5"). Lowering it too much is how clearance issues underneath the bike happen. Otherwise lowering a little shouldn't hurt. If you get the roaring toys lowering links, you can lower it one notch at a time to see how it feels.

I had a pregen with a shaved seat. That seat was hard as hell and just hurt a lot.
