This link here seems to be a pretty good list right away. I have some experience with Virtual Dub and I agree with their snapshot entirely, it feels old and basic but it does great work with AVI files. Not to mention the compression is AMAZING. It is entirely possible to reduce file sizes to 1/10th of their original size while maintaining excellent quality.

Lightworks after checking out some videos does actually look really cool, but from the videos alone I agree does look extremely complicated. If you have the patience I'd give that one a try. Personally I'll be downloading that one too if I ever use Windows 7 again.

I use Openshot on Ubuntu with decent results, however the program does crash fairly regularly.
