Yeah, I doubt that conversation happened. Klondike's got a point. It really could have been anything. Maybe a bird flew overhead and dropped something and it happened to land on your speedo, maybe an acorn fell down from a tree onto it, or maybe a piece of space debris from an overhead satellite hit it.
