I very much need to get myself one of these. I know exactly what you're talking about --- the very polite sounding "duh-ding" rotary thumb switch bell on bicycle handlebars... The sound you hear when walking through a nice neighborhood and someone politely dings the bell to warn you that you are approaching from behind.
Or more simply, the "GTFO OF MY WAY, BITCH!" bell.
As for the superstition -- I think that was invented by someone trying to turn a profit and sell a product. Seems like it's working.
As for bells, my star carbon viper has been holding up quite well for quite some time. It just gets a little smelly and I have to take all the pads out and clean them on the regular.
