So true, even with proper maintenance they will eventually stretch(
EARLY WARNING SIGN), and break.
That's why I always keep that skill sharp, both up & downshifts, I've only had mine break once, and it SUCKED, gotta really plan ahead in a city situation, if possible.
2¢ WORTH:
Install another clutch and zip-tie it to the existing one, an old biker trick, that pays for itself, or use the old stretched one as a backup, or carry a spare. I have one in my tank bag, along with a pull throttle cable.
You could also coil them up, put them in a Ziploc and store them under the seat, etc...
Cheap insurance.
