yeah, phones don't work reliably as GPS. Depending upon the app, they'll use a combination of cellular data and GPS tracking. Problem is when you're in area with no cell service, the data link part is broken for app.
Found this out hard way when in back-woods of Oregon on logging roads with no cell service. Phone apps, kaput! Went back to TomTom with no problems.
