Ride in a manner where you command the attention of the vehicles around you. In this situation that would mean being closer to the center of the lane so that the BMW wouldn't be able to pass you. Preferably you would ride so that no car is in the lane next to you, but that's impossible when there's lots of traffic. So in your case maintain good position so that you're visible to the car in the lane to the left of you, which in my opinion would be near the hood or even farther up.
