Try using just your index finger to pull in the clutch. This way you have most of your hand holding onto the handle bar and there is no accidental pulling the clutch in when you start to come up. Just a thought as you're still figuring out the best technique for you. This is the way I like to do them. I'm not so good yet either but I've found it to be a comfortable grip.
