There should be nothing inherently wrong with having a "nut" on the end of the filter. One problem with the nut is that there will be the those who think that it's there for putting the filter on when it's really for taking the filter off. So then they feel the need to torque it like a lug nut on a semi and they literally tear the metal at the spot welds.

BTW, this is nothing new. Years ago a similar thing happened with Fram oil filters being banned by some race orgs because of a manufacturing defect.

Also, don't think that OEM is always best. There's nothing saying that these "aftermarket" companies aren't making them for OEMs. Making multiple brands with the same equipment is very common.
