You are on the right track. A muffler from a newer bike of much bigger CC will produce a much lower back pressure, so would not steal top end performance. Image a 600/1000 engine pushes out a much larger volume of exhaust gases than a 250. So sending 250 volumes out one of their mufflers would not be restrictive. The only consideration would be size & weight.
