There is just under an inch of slack. I went on the tighter side of the tolerances knowing now how much the chain will stretch initially!
I know these sprockets wear rather quickly, but it should last a good while with my mellow highway commute.
I would definitely suggest re-gearing this bike. Especially if you don't have a lot of stoplights to deal with!
