When I try to install the brake lever it isn't as wide as the stock one so it wants to slide up and down in the housing. It can slide so far down it won't make contact with the actual brake.

Are you referring to the brake reservoir plunger or brake light actuator.? If it does not touch either one it's the wrong one. Take a picture of it installed and compared to the OEM, contact the seller and send it back.
