Gauze, alcohol wipes and ice packs were my most commonly used supplies when working stand-by EMT jobs at events.
Makeshift tourniquets need some sort of windlass to tighten the cord. Commercial products such as the CAT have been proven to be very effective/consistent and are the preferred tool for the job.
