Does it sound like it's backfiring?

If you hold the throttle steady, at say 3000 RPMs when sitting in the garage, can you get it to do the same?

Have you adjusted the valves?

A compression test could tell you if a valve is not closing properly or is burned.

What do the plugs look like?
