They've been hitting new-start fires as hard as they can, even more than in past years. Something made your fire blow *up* hard, and they threw a lot at it to keep it from getting even more out of control. Some areas, which burn all the time, handle fire better (Santa Clarita), but other areas go nuts.
Next up, watch out for rain. Fire-burned soil doesn't handle rain well at all and we get mudslides.
