You do know that the shifter rod is reverse threaded on one end right? Instead of lefty loosey, it's the opposite. Back the lock nut off and you should be able unthread it.

You can double up on the nuts on one end where the outer or inner nut tightens against the other. Then use a wrench to break the rod free using one of the nuts.
