Maybe the cable broke most of its strands and the few remaining ones stretched, so it wasn't obvious it had a problem. The mechanic then adjusted it and it worked fine. It might be better to go back to the same shop and get them to replace the cable. A polite suggestion of putting the $20 already spent toward the new one might be agreeable to the shop.
