well, i checked the switches, both of them. both work as designed. so i replaced the bulb with the old incandescent filament, worked fine. the led bulb was a Chinese no name off ebay.
seems to me the bulb was the failed part, a short to power from the running light circuit to the brake lamp circuit of said bulb
