I'm at 13k miles now, got my bike last October at 2k. Make sure you do your valves and change your oil. AND PLEASE DO NOT FORGET TO LUBE YOUR CHAIN, I see motorcycles parked at my university all the time with rusted chains. I sometimes put stickynotes on their windshields telling them to lube their chain.
