With nimble hands and exact procedure, you can actually remove pre-gen carbs easily without removing air-box. Just push it to back of bike and you get 1/4" clearance between carbs and intake-boots to remove. I'll do DIY with photos next time I remove my pre-gen carbs.

i could pull my carbs on my new gen without removing the air box, i did unbolt it and slide it rearwards some to gain some needed room.
