fortionately for me it is wider at the tailstock end than at the chuck end so I could just move down about 3" and rtim the next section , and repeat till I have the entire rod to within the size I need....

Your tailstock should have a fore-aft adjustment to allow you to correct that problem. On my Atlas it's two set screws, one front and one back. You loosen one and then tighten the other to make the adjustment. When they're tightened against each other it's locked into position. I'm sure a Logan has a similar way to align the tailstock.
