you'll lose some low end power if you remove the airbox, but it will breathe better at higher revs. you will notice a difference even if you keep the stock exhaust.
I would recommend keeping the airbox for now and get the panel replacement filter, unless you're planning on getting a full exhaust in the near future.
FYI, removing the airbox is a royal PITA.
