Yeah, check oil for bearing shrapnel. Pull out filter and see what's it caught.

Knocking can also be rubber innards in clutch going out. Very common on pre-gen bikes. There's write-up somewhere to retrofit new-gen '08-12 clutch.

Or could also be cam-chain tensioner. Pre-gen ones tend to get corroded and stop advancing. That's easy to pull off and inspect.

Yeah, don't ever walk away from idling bike. Test fan by applying power directly. Also test thermo-switch in pot being brought to oil. Measure temp when switch closes. If it doesn't, then that's problem.

Personally, I prefer riding my pre-gen around town more. It's lighter and more manuveurable than bigger, heavier new-gen; which works better on track at high-speeds.
