No reason NOT to get a good back protector insert. There are even Level 2 protectors now that are soft.
Race protectors are typically separate pieces of gear with wide velcro waistbands and, usually, shoulder straps. That's different from the upgraded inserts designed to go into the pocket in your jacket. The latter are a major upgrade in protection.
What rationale is there to avoid easily available, affordable protection?
