Changing that preference to "do not subscribe" goes into effect right away, but it only is changing what your preference is for future threads. Every other thread that you've already subscribed to will still shoot out an email to you. To change the notification options for existing subscribed threads, you need to go to your subscribed threads, select all, and change it to whatever you like.
