Pre-gen and new-gen shocks are actually very similar. It's swingarm linkage knuckle that provides most of benefits with increased leverage. About 2x as much leverage with new-gen linkage. You can actually fit new-gen linkage, dog-bones to pre-gen to get 80% of improvements.

Also very simple upgrade to replace entire rear-end with new-gen:

- swingarm
- knuckle
- dog-bones
- shock
- brake-caliper & carrier
- rear wheel & axle

Then you'd get 100% stiffer rear-end and can use 17" tyre for much larger selection. I got entire rear end off another racer for $50... needed 2-hrs of cleaning, but fully useable. Really transformed handling of my 2002 commuter.
