Please watch Youtube : Around the corner (1937) How Differential steering works. I cant link to it from here at work but it explains how to build your own simple and durable differential. Based on what I have seen you build so far, you have more than enough skills to fabricate a working differential for any future trikes you may build. I agree with you that it is unnecessary for this project but it never hurts to learn.
The first few mins of the video are weird but stick with it and you will see why I think you could build one easily. Just 9 mins and a few seconds of your time.
