But... I found a small o-ring in the drained engine oil. I am trying to understand where this could have come from. I'm thinking it was one that for some reason came off of the filter "bolt" at some point.
Odd, but if the bike was purchased used you never know...
As long as you have one on the filter assembly I wouldn't worry about it.
