I used to ride slowly and gently with the choke on down the block. Then as the bike warms up, I'll decrease the choke. By the time I get out of my neighborhood (about 3/4 mile) and onto the main road, I can usually get rid of the choke completely.

But nowadays, I have an even better technique. It's called getting rid of the 250 and getting a 300. It could be 30 degrees, the bike starts right up. No need to mess with anything.
