You actually need an amp-meter to gauge charging. It will show whether current is flowing
into the battery or
out of it. This is actually independent of voltage.
Autos used to have these as standard equipment. But as people evolved to be less tech-savvy, and rely more on shops to troubleshoot, it was removed.
