I was reading back through this thread and was coming to the same conclusion.
Look at the Kevlar riding jeans, they aren't completely lined in kevlar, just the knees and butt areas.
What about making a riding jacket that was part leather or maybe macrame' 550 cord with chain mail in the elbows, shoulders and back?
Heck even my leather jacket has reinforced double layers in the elbows and shoulders. A leather jacket with chain mail in the elbows and shoulders would look pretty mad max.
