OK, so I pulled the fairings off again this morning. Ear to flasher relay, no sound whatsoever. I then disconnected the rear right turn signal (incandescent). Front right turn signal (LED) works fine, same flash rate whether rear turn signal is plugged in or not.

So I have to conclude that the relay is an electronic one. Thanks all for your comments and insight.
