It's obviously easier to just blame some gravel in the road rather than your own mistake, but that could also account for a little dust cloud (some of the "smoke") too. The lead guy coming back at 2:30 jokingly says, "Watch out for the gravel!" It's possible he saw and avoided it, or he could've just assumed that's what happened. *shrug* I don't see a brake light, but the sun completely washes out the taillight at times too.
If it was simply hitting some gravel, then I guess the lesson to be learned is to keep an eye out for hazards on public roads. If you're riding at a level where you can't adjust for unexpected items in the road, you're just begging for something to pop up and get you.
