Uhaul 5x10 box trailers are fairly cheap to rent. $24 a day if you return to the same location. You'll need to supply your own wheel chock and ramp, but those are easy enough to come by. Fits a bike and plenty of gear, and once you've pulled the bike out you can set up a cot or air mattress. Locks up solidly if you decide to grab a motel before/after.

I did the math once and if you buy a new trailer, it'd be something like 50 uses before buying paid for itself compared to renting. Plus with Uhaul, you don't have to store it between uses, maintain or license it. Only real downside is picking up and dropping off.
