Actually, shouldn't checking the bike's oil screen be the first step in the diagnosing this issue?
If you find hard, black rubber bits sitting on the oil screen it can only have come from one place inside the engine. If you don't find any evidence of rubber bits you're probably hearing something else, like maybe the cam chain or maybe the engine actually does have a main bearing problem.
