What are trying to do?

If you are replacing chain, get one with 106-links and that's it. No sprocket swaps or removing links needed.

If you want taller gearing, a 15/42t front swap is easier. Only 1.7% different from 14/40t combo (both about 6% taller than stock). Less chain-wrap angle in front is more efficient with less frictional losses.
