I don't have any 300-specific info for you either, but I have altered the gearing of my SV650n by adding 1T to the countershaft, which dropped the RPMs about 500. It put the engine in a much smoother spot for Interstate cruising, but didn't net much of a MPG gain - maybe 1. It still gets over 50+ MPG at 70+ either way.
I have heard of more significant improvements from adding a larger windscreen (mine is a naked, so it's not much of an option - plus I don't mind the wind)
