IMHO louder is not better. Louder is louder. That's fatiguing, annoying to both you and everyone around you, and of little practical value.

But that's just me. Go ahead, put that noisemaker on there and make up your own mind.

More to the point, ride near a bike with a slip-on on it and see if it's THAT much more noticeable. Can you hear it? Sure, if you're listening for it. Will it get your attention? I don't really think so.

I don't listen to loud music when I drive and don't talk on the phone if I can possibly help it. I've never once been alerted to the presence of a bike solely because of its noise that I can recall.

"Loud pipes save lives?" More like "Loud pipes make me want to load up the ol' 12 gauge with rock salt."
