If you think about the lengths of the links in rear suspension, the amount of movement of the wheel is X times larger than the distance that the shock compresses, effectively lowering that ratio for the whole linkage system. It's really not specific to bicycles and is just one giant linkage analysis problem from a mechanical design textbook.

That said, those shocks look like junk that come on Walmart bikes. They're weird sizes.
