How do you guys mount new tires on the rims?

I tried blasting compressed air in through the valve stem after I had put the tires on and it didn't work. Do I have to remove the valve core to set the bead on the rim when doing this? I also tried spraying starter fluid all around the rim but it only set my tire on fire..... The bike shops nearby are all closed for the holidays I'd really like to ride again asap!
