I too just started riding a month ago; and I also live in Washington!
I was looking at the older ones to save money; but ended up going with the new-gen and boy am I glad I did! I guess its still personal preference but I don't regret going with the more expensive; newer generation ninja.
Keep looking on craigslist in the washington/oregon area (portland isnt too far from seattle) and there were always new gen ninjas on there, with new listings every two days if not more. Eastern washington also has quite a few. My good friend bought his 2008 ninja for 2500 over in the tri cities area. It was a smokin' deal, he did have to drive through the night though... but totally worth it!
I paid 3000 for my 2009. They are out there... waiting for you =)
