Did you clean the opening to remove any corrosion? If not cleaned well it will leak. It needs to be smooth and clean.

I'd try another (preferably correct) o-ring with a dab of silicone lube (not caulk) from the plumbing department.

I've replaced leaking coolant seals before, and never needed any additional sealant if everything else is correct.
