Southern route will save you many many miles.

But...

Don't go through NYC. The traffic is ridiculous and the tolls extortionate (TWENTY SEVEN DOLLARS to get across the George Washington Bridge with a single-axle trailer -- $13 for every additional axle above that).

You also wind up on I-95, which has a lot of traffic. Note that trailers are not allowed on parkways in the NY/NJ/CT area... which kinda sux because I live 1.5 miles from a parkway.

Instead, jog north to I-84 around Wilkes-Barre or wherever it makes sense. The bridge across the Hudson at Newburgh never has traffic and costs something like a buck. Or maybe a few bucks with a trailer. You have to head up north anyway, so might as well do it before you get to NYC.

84 will also get you most of the way to Thompson. Smooth sailing.
