Safety wire is used to maintain tension in the direction that tightens a part that might otherwise work its way loose. In this case, my oil filter which was freshly switched to a K&N version. If you peruse some race org rules you'll find an assortment of other bits that require it. There's also like a very serious aviation industry spec for how it should be done, if you're into dry technical documents.

It also means 'spend a few minutes trying to get a picture of my oil filter without removing more bodywork + with poor lighting'
