We do have a world famous mountain bike area called "The Shore" or "North Shore". There have been several instances of trail sabotage including a 70 year old hiker that was caught on video & charged. At least her actions were pretty minor: throwing limbs etc onto the trails built by mountain bikers.
It really boils down to respect: courtesy to others encountered on the trails & road. Bombing down a trail and blasting past hikers, some with young children and giving attitude earns no friends. As usual; it's a minority that give the majority the bad rep. Same with loud pipes and getting in people's faces does nothing to encourage good relations and public support.
